Call Him “Johnny Champion”: Johnny Gargano Wins the NXT Championship at Takeover New York

Johnny Gargano has finally become the NXT champion. Johnny Westling fought Adam Cole at Takeover: New York on April 5 in a 2-out-of3 Falls Match for the vacant title and now Gargano is the new champ.

It’s a long time coming for NXT fans, who supported Johnny every step of the way. The Superstar has always fought his heart out and has truly defined the term “underdog” in NXT. He almost always had the crowd on his side throughout his NXT career, despite never having the odds on his side.

Gargano’s road to the championship has indeed been a long one but i’s one that he’s definitely earned. Gargano’s initial tryout with WWE was met with a “no,” but he never stopped working hard. He continued to do everything in his power to eventually make it to Vince McMahon’s company and when he finally did, there was no denying that he was in the right place.

His match with Cole was one for the ages. Adam won the first fall, Johnny won the second and even though it was even, Adam’s Undisputed Era teammates tipped the scales. Bobby Fish, Kyle O’Reilly and Roderick Strong came down to the ring and interfered, nearly costing Gargano the third fall.

But Johnny does what he does: he kept getting back up. Eventually, he overcame the odds and won the gold. Now that he’s the new NXT champion, Johnny Gargano is on top of the black and gold brand. Many fans would say that it’s a position that he’s more than earned.

Now the underdog is the top dog.
