SNL Star Sings Haunting Version Of ‘Hallelujah’ As Hillary Clinton

After weeks of hilarious riffs on presidential debates, “Saturday Night Live” was much more subdued in the wake of Donald Trump’s shocking election victory last week. Even Alec Baldwin was reportedly too upset over the results to return to the set one more to deliver one more performance as the Republican nominee turned president-elect.

But Kate McKinnon stood up bravely for the rest of us and delivered a performance that will down in history amongst the great SNL moments. And the tears filling millions of eyes that night and in millions of views online after are not tears of joy. In fact, there wasn’t a single laugh in her stunning introduction.

Dressed as Clinton, the “Ghostbusters” co-star sat down and performed an incredible rendition of the late Leonard Cohen’s classic “Hallelujah.” It was a double punch to the gut, as the acclaimed singer passed away this week at the age of 82. His lyrics were a poetic fit for this year’s disastrous election and gave the normally rough and tumble McKinnon a chance to show another side of herself, and Clinton, that many supporters probably wished the world could have seen before voting last Tuesday.

And if all that wasn’t enough, “Hillary” ended her performance with a simple but powerful message to women, and everyone who supported her historic campaign effort, by declaring, “I’m not giving up and neither should you.”
