What’s the impact of America’s long presidential campaigns?

If you feel like presidential campaigns have gotten longer and longer and longer, you’re not wrong to feel that way. It was July 28, 2017, when former congressman John Delaney launched his 2020 campaign – more than 1,100 days before Election Day.

For context, that’s nearly 600 days earlier than Sen. Ted Cruz became the first major candidate to officially throw his hat into the ring for 2016.

There are no official start dates in the American election process so it’s hard to say whether or not our presidential election is the longest in the world. But what are the effects of the nearly continuous presidential cycle?
