A new president for Notre Europe.
António Vitorino has taken over as president of Notre Europe, the Paris-based think-tank founded by Jacques Delors, the former president of the European Commission. He replaces Tommaso Padoa-Schioppa who died suddenly in December.
Vitorino is eminently qualified for the task, having been a defence minister in Portugal, then European commissioner for justice and home affairs under Romano Prodi in 1999-2004, and a member of the Convention on the Future of Europe under Valéry Giscard d’Estaing.
Padoa-Schioppa would have enjoyed the irony of appointing someone from Portugal at a time when member states of the eurozone appear to be hesitating about whether “the periphery” is “le nôtre”.
Vitorino announced his arrival by issuing a letter signed by Delors and Notre Europe’s directors that berates the EU for timidity in embracing the Arab spring.
