Salute to America: All the machines of war on display at Donald Trump’s ‘show of a lifetime’

The military hardware is moving into position. The crowds are gathering to watch. And the protesters are getting hot under the collar. President Donald Trump is promising the "show of a lifetime" on the National Mall for the Fourth of July.

Mr Trump is marshalling tanks, bombers and other machinery of war for the climax of this year’s Independence Day celebration. It’s an event that is traditionally soft on military might, and some commentators have turned on the president for ordering America’s armed forces to stand to attention as a political prop.
