MANKATO, Minn — The #15 Maverick wrestling team (8-4, 4-2) will conclude the regular season this week, with duals against the Northern State Wolves (4-12, 0-5) on Thursday, February 11, and the Southwest Minnesota State Mustangs (7-9, 3-3) on Friday, February 12. Both duals are scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. on the road.
The Mavericks will look to bounce back after a tough loss to #2 St. Cloud State on Saturday. Alphonso Vruno (Sr., 141 lbs.) will look to continue his recent hot streak, where has won his last six matches. In his senior campaign, he stands at 14-5. #2 Matt Mincey (R-Sr., 157 lbs.) looks to get back in the win column after being defeated for the just the first time this season on Saturday. Mincey is 18-1 on the season, and is ranked second in the nation in his weight class respectively.
#8 Adam Cooling (Jr., 174 lbs.) will seek to keep building on his recent success. Cooling has won eight of his last nine matches, highlighted by a 3-1 sudden victory decision over #4 Clayton Jennissen (St. Cloud State) on Saturday. #8 Scott VanDeLoo (Sr., 184 lbs.) looks to continue his stellar senior campaign. For the season, he is 16-3 overall.
Northern State is led by their one ranked wrestler, Joe Gomez, who ranks seventh at 197-pounds. Last season, the Mavericks picked up a win over Northern State by a final score of 44-6.
Leading the way for Southwest Minnesota State is their heavyweight Cole Wilson, who ranks eighth nationally. Last week, he upset top-ranked and previously undefeated Austin Goergen (St. Cloud State) in overtime. The Mavericks defeated Southwest Minnesota State last year by a score of 29-9.
Concluding this week’s duals, the team will have a short break before the NCAA DII Super Region 3 Tournament, which will be on February 27 and 28 in Sioux Falls, S.D.
