Minnesota picked up its first win over a top-10 opponent this season on Sunday afternoon when the Gophers dropped No. 8 Rutgers, 17-16, at the Sports Pavilion. It was the Gophers first top-10 win since the team defeated Penn State by the exact same score last season in State College.
Minnesota split the day’s 10 matches with the Scarlet Knights, but a tech fall from No. 4 Brett Pfarr at 197 pounds proved to be the difference in the dual. After drawing weights, the dual began with Pfarr’s match. His 23-8 victory over Anthony Messner gave the Gophers an early 5-0 lead and the bonus points that would be critical in the victory.
No. 8 Tommy Thorn knocked off then-No. 4 Anthony Ashnault, 8-1. Ashnault is the highest ranked opponent Thorn has beat in his young career. No. 9 Jake Short, Brandon Kingsley and Nick Wanzek also delivered for Minnesota by earning victories on the afternoon.
Minnesota returns to the Sports Pavilion on Sunday for its last home Big Ten dual of the season as Purdue comes to Minneapolis. That dual will begin at 1 p.m. Central and can be streamed live on BTN Plus.
